Carol Darby: Making Every Voice Heard
When determination meets a mother's love, extraordinary things happen.
For Carol Darby, the journey into inclusive community theatre began out of necessity and a refusal to let barriers limit her daughter’s potential.
After repeatedly facing closed doors when trying to enroll her daughter, LeAnn—who has learning disabilities, ataxia cerebral palsy, and a speech impairment—into local drama groups, Carol decided to take matters into her own hands.
Frustrated by the lack of genuinely accessible opportunities in mainstream arts, Carol, alongside her husband Ron and daughter Nicola, set out in 2011 to build a space where everyone, regardless of ability, could take center stage.
Together, they founded the Elektric Apple Theatre Group
The early days were marked by tough searches for an accessible, affordable space. The group found its crucial first breakthrough when the Lighthouse in Anfield stepped forward to offer free rent, paired with the unwavering support of Rob and Brenda Baynes.of Liverpool Heartbeat Apple started.
What started as a grassroots family initiative has blossomed into an acclaimed theatrical powerhouse. Elektric Apple achieved national prominence when they became one of the very few disabled theatre companies ever invited to perform at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Carol’s tireless dedication to community development and inclusion earned her a British Citizen Award (BCA) in the Arts.and Queens Award for Voluntary Service
In addition to driving the group's vision, Carol serves as the company’s dedicated Safeguarding Officer, ensuring that every rehearsal and performance remains a safe, empowering, and supportive environment for all members.
Under her leadership, the Elektric Apple Theatre Group continues to grow from strength to strength—proving that, given the right stage, every voice deserves to be heard.
I am delighted to announce that I have joined the Board of Trustees at Liverpool Heartbeat, a fantastic local charity dedicated to inspiring and supporting young people in our community.
I look forward to working alongside the team to help make a lasting, positive impact on children across the region.
