Across the Mersey

A Historic Swim, A Living Legacy

Anyone familiar with the Wirral Peninsula and the iconic Liverpool skyline knows the mystic pull of the River Mersey. It’s a living mural — shifting tides, working docks, ferries, industry, heritage — a river that has shaped the city and its people for centuries.

A challenge that spans generations

For most, the Mersey is a symbol of home. For a select few, it’s a calling. Since the first recorded successful crossing in 1863, swimmers from every generation have felt the same desire to take on the river — and the same battle against an ever‑changing tide of bureaucracy.

The inaugural Across Mersey Swim was organised by John Hulley — often called The Forgotten Man of British Olympic History — as part of the Grand Liverpool Olympic Festival. Nine swimmers took to the water, cheered on by thousands lining both banks. Only two completed the crossing, swimming more than five miles and spending nearly two hours in the river.

The Mersey’s swimming legacy stretches even further back. In 1886 — the year after Captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel — Webb, then living in Wallasey, established the Across Mersey Swim. His event ran annually until the Second World War, with the final pre‑war crossing taking place in 1938. This early tradition laid the foundations for the generations of swimmers who would follow.

The modern‑day Across Mersey Swim was revived in 1994 by Robin Baynes, whose passion for community, challenge and the river itself brought the event back to life. His commitment ensured the Mersey crossing once again became a celebrated part of Liverpool’s sporting identity.

Leadership through friendship

Since 2007, the swim has been organised by Robin’s great friend Liam Hanlon of Tri4Life. Under Liam’s stewardship, the event has grown in scale, safety and spirit — honouring its heritage while inspiring new generations of swimmers to take on the mighty Mersey.

Today, the annual cross‑Mersey swim stands as a testament to determination, friendship and the enduring allure of the river. It celebrates the pioneers of 1863, the legacy of Captain Webb, the revival of 1984, the charitable spark of 1994, and the leadership that continues to carry the tradition forward.
